About us

"Baan" in Lao means home or village and Samsa is the raintree you can see as you stroll past the Nam Khan River close to our hotel. The property is made up of two distinct buildings, each offering a different way to experience Luang Prabang.

The shophouse
The Shophouse, a UNESCO-protected 1950s Chinese-style shophouse, is the main building. With high ceilings, generous proportions, and a strong sense of history, it houses our most spacious and character-filled rooms. These rooms celebrate the building’s heritage while offering modern comfort through contemporary design, handcrafted details, and carefully chosen materials.

the townhouse
A short walk away is The Town House, a compact riverside building offering a cosy stay. With balconies overlooking the Nam Khan River, plenty of greenery, and relaxed interiors, the rooms here are designed for guests who love being at the heart of the old town — stepping straight out into Luang Prabang’s daily rhythms and returning to a comfortable, characterful base.

Jo, Julie and the Baan SAMSA team love to share ideas and tips on what to see and do whilst you are here.
your hosts

We are Julie & Jo, and Luang Prabang has been our home for over 20 years. We’re delighted to welcome you to Baan Samsa, our boutique hotel on the peninsula — a place designed for slowing down, feeling cared for, and discovering the quiet beauty of this town we love so much.

Formerly known as The Apsara, Baan Samsa is now under new management and has been thoughtfully refreshed. While respecting the heritage of the buildings, we’ve focused on the details that matter most: comfortable, uncluttered rooms, warm service, and small touches that help you feel at home from the moment you arrive.

Having lived here for many years, we’ve gathered our favourite places, walks, temples, cafés, and experiences into this book — ideas to help you explore Luang Prabang at your own pace, whether it’s your first visit or a return one.

We hope your stay is restful, inspiring, and memorable.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out — we’re always happy to help.
